Bird & Bird
While Bristows had its offices in Lincoln’s Inn, Bird & Bird was located in another Inns of Court, Gray’s Inn. Their patent law department was strengthened after the appointment of Karl Arnold in 1962. Arnold came from Bristows and recruited young solicitors who turned out to succeed him in the department like Trevor Cook and Morag Macdonald, who had practised as a barrister in Queen Elizabeth Building. Interestingly, Bird & Bird was also particularly innovative in publishing informational and marketing materials to explain their expertise. Of these corporate attempts to attract prospective clients emerged ‘From Idea to Market-place’, a glossy booklet first published in 1987, highlighting the commercial importance of intellectual property as an asset that attracted considerable interest.
